Bigs S.T.E.A.M. Class

Join licensed teacher, Lauren Leggett, as she leads this fun and exciting class for Bigs. Students will explore hands-on activities incorporating all elements of STEAM to provide an unforgettable learning experience. Applying science vocabulary in order to facilitate higher level scientific projects at home. This class will help teach students problem solving skills in a hands-on application.

Join us monthly to learn about composers, genres of music, and different instrument families. We will begin learning the basics of music vocabulary, sounds, and even create some of our own homemade instruments, as we explore the wide world of music. We will have guest musicians demonstrate the sounds of various instruments during the semester.

Book Club
|
Enjoy reading four funny, heart-warming, and exciting books and learn the basics of literary analysis and low-stress public speaking. Students will need to read or listen (audio-book will be made available) to the assigned book before the class meets in order to get the most out of the book club activities. Book Club activities will not place an emphasis on writing; however, writing extension suggestions will be provided.

Coding
|
This course will introduce students to fundamental ideas in computer science using the visual programming language Scratch. Basic algorithms and data structures will be explored in engaging projects that include video games and scientific calculations. Project selection will be student driven, allowing the course to adapt to student interests and background.

World Cultures Class

Learn about a different country/region of the globe each month through an immersion in the culture. We'll cover both physical and human geography of the area. A cultural experience wouldn't be complete without tasting some of the country's cuisine. Join our group as we explore these far off places and develop cultural awareness.

This class focuses on hands-on activities that explore the biology of the farm. We will learn what makes a farm function from the microorganisms in the compost pile to the large cows strolling around the pasture. This class utilizes our local Conservation and Agriculture organizations to enhance the class with live demonstrations and guest speakers.

Playing chess helps to develop many mental skills that are useful in life, such as: logic, strategic and tactical thinking, planning and preparation, and problem-solving. Chess Club provides an opportunity to simply have fun playing the game and making friendships, while building these skills at the same time. Chess Club is open to all students, regardless of skill level. Whether you are a skilled player who wants to sharpen your skills or you’re a beginner who wants to learn how to play the game, we welcome you.

We will be creating monthly paintings on canvas. The teacher will introduce students to art terminology and techniques which will allow them to further develop their artistic abilities. At each meeting, the teacher will walk students through using the techniques learned to create their own piece to take home.

Sewing
|
If there’s one homesteading skill that everyone should know, regardless of gender or age, it’s sewing. Whether it’s sewing on a quick button or repairing a small tear in a pair of pants, sewing is an invaluable skill. Join Mrs. Ruth Slade-Seargent, twice a month, to hone your threading, stitching, and mending skills. Learn from Mrs. Ruth’s years of experience and love for this art of craftsmanship. This is a beginner level sewing course, that will start with the basics of sewing and step up in level as the semester progresses. Early classes will have small class inclusive projects, but will progress to a multi-class project that will span multiple class sessions. Students will learn sewing machine basics as well. Come join this laid back, fun experience, and leave with an invaluable skill.

Middle School Drama Festival Competition Group

Drama Festivals offer students an opportunity to share their talent and hard work with other students in a competitive platform. The Mississippi Middle School One Act Play Festival for grades 6-8 is held each year in March, at Oak Grove High School.

Spanish
|
Buenos-Dias! The best time to learn a foreign language is in youth. We are excited to be able to bring a foreign language class to The Country Schoolhouse with Mr. Adolfo Pardo. A native of Peru, Adolfo has spent time living in both South America and Europe, before moving to America with his family. He has taught his native language of Spanish in many different settings. This beginner level Spanish course will teach students the Spanish alphabet sounds and words by utilizing song, with Mr. Adolfo on the piano, as well as with games and recitation. Students will be introduced to the basics of the Spanish language of numbers, colors, and simple phrases.

At our one-day unit studies, we learn about a specific topic through an integration of language arts, math, science, social studies, and art. Throughout the day, students participate in multiple hands-on activities that add enrichment to that month's topic. Come join us for these fun days of learning.
